Since mid-December 2024, all active development on the shopware/shopware repo now happens exclusively in the open on GitHub!
Shopware has been open source for more than ten years. Starting with the release of Shopware 6.0., with our move to the MIT license, we were more open than ever. Whilst Shopware's source code has been publicly available for a long time, the actual development always happened behind closed curtains in a private repository.
We know that our open source heritage plays a central role in our success. Therefore, we are pleased to announce that we’ve taken steps to become even more open by switching to active development on GitHub.
This levels the playing field for internal and external contributions and enables another level of transparency.
Specifically, this means for you:
Increased transparency: All changes by Shopware developers are reviewed and merged publicly. You have the chance to get a glimpse of what is currently under development and join the discussions among core developers.
External and internal pull requests are treated the same: the same rules, processes, and workflows apply to all. This includes the fact that the GitHub action pipeline is now the single source of truth for continuous integration.
Streamlined external contributions: External contributions can be accepted and merged directly on GitHub. This eliminates many extra steps on our side to merge external contributions, which should lead to faster acceptance rates after a successful review. Also, you finally get the
merged
badge on your PR instead of PRs beingclosed
with a separate link to your commit.
With that move to GitHub, some contribution workflows you might already be used to will change (for the better); we’ve updated the contribution guidelines to reflect the current workflows. However, you can expect more improvements while we get used to working on GitHub. We believe this move will lead to another level of collaboration between Shopware and you, the community! Happy contributing!
